Reaction: Antonio Brown Walks Off Field

In the News – What to do About Antonio Brown? Get him HELP…ASAP! He may claim he does not have CTE, ““Nah. If I had CTE I wouldn’t be able to have this beautiful gym, I wouldn’t be able to be creative,” said Antonio Brown. “I wouldn’t be able to communicate. He didn’t hit me that hard. You know, I got up and walked off the field. We won the game. I was all right. You play the game long enough, everyone get hit hard.”” However, everything about his extreme behavior changes since his hard hit and concussion in 2016 would indicate there is something SERIOUS going on with his brain.

YES, his Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) score would be high if he took the test which makes him more vulnerable to problems as an adult, but this is much more complex. He lived football, his father was a professional/famous footballer (Eddie Brown). His parents separated when he was about 8 years old after his father joined the Firebirds. At the age of 12 his mother remarried and his relationship with his stepdad was volatile. He moved out at the age of 16 for 6-months only to couch surf or sleep wherever he could. He was a star athlete in high school and was well recognized for it, however, he was unable to preform well academically due to his personal issues. His poor grades resulted in his delayed entry into Florida State University; a major disappointment. During his time in prep school at North Carolina Tech he was expelled for getting into confrontations. Once he got into Central Michigan University his story begins to improve, he starts to see a pattern of success and achievement.

He was his best with the Steelers from 2010 to 2018, He was concussed in Jan 2016 by Vontaze Burfict then started exhibiting noticeably different behaviors (which are noted in the comments and the article). This is also the time frame when his former trainer claims his sexual assaults occurred in 2017 and 2018. A series of financial stressors ensue after the Raiders sign on Brown with a three year deal worth $50 million, $30 million of which are guaranteed. Although after several infractions the Raiders figured out a way to NOT PAY him because of a technicality of an Instagram post! A pattern of paying fines, partial payment contracts with special clauses. court hearings, controversy, risk taking, confrontations became the new norm.

Look at the linked article and below I’ve added a picture of some additional infractions noted from social media sources mainly between 2014-2019. You don’t go from thriving as an athlete with virtually no infractions… (only the Spencer Lanning inadvertent face kicking incident after a punt return in Sept 2014) multiple infractions a year, including criminal charges, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines. The only answer is a personal one for Brown and it will take time to get the help he needs. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is caused by repeated trauma to the head (such as the bumping together of helmets) and is considered a degenerative brain disease. In 2017 Boston University conducted a study of former NFL players and 99% of them were found to have CTE; that is a HUGE finding. I predict current NFL players more than likely have some stage of CTE or presenting features within the first 3 years. Just like everyone came home from the war with “shell shock”, our professional football players are damaging their brains and no one is listening.

I hope you didn’t see the actions of Antonio Brown on the field today and laugh or mock or blow him off. The only reaction we as humans should have is one of deep concern and compassion. This man has seen his money dangled over his head from an NFL fishing pole and taken away over and over again since departing from the Steelers. Then, after being told he must fulfill certain incentives to completed his contractual obligations to receive the other parts of his pay they didn’t even let him on the field…that is simply some sort of cruel, twisted narcissistic financial torture. No one does their job for free. To treat a man (all the players are their ‘gift horses’) in such a manner is despicable, they expected a reaction and the one they got was due to his brain not functioning on all it’s cylinders. His brain never fully developed as a child due to his high ACE score and childhood trauma alone can lead to irrational behavior, trouble processing and poor decision making. What he has exhibited for YEARS points to all the signs of CTE though. Since the Buccaneers can take away his one million dollars, they should pay it forward to his treatment… Do good in 2022, stop the harm~
